How Should You Lay Out Your Garden?

by Jennifer Lewis

If you enjoy gardening or you want a fabulous scenic outdoor space to relax in then reaching this goal is not as difficult as many may imagine. There are several layout types that can be used during the initial design phase, and each may be perfect for some people or spaces but not ideal for others. Landscaping specialists typically use forms when composing the overall plan. This involves using arcs and lines to create the desired geometric shapes. You can use these ideas or you can sketch something that represents the area as you see it for a unique and custom approach.

The first thing you have to think about is the terrain that you'll be working with and the shape of the area. You should think about how plants will compliment the area and what everything will look like once it is put together. You can keep things level or add dimension by adding some taller and shorter plants and some that are fuller than others.

As you are sketching out what you hope to accomplish on paper you will get a better idea of what works and what does not fit well with the individual area or climate. Identify any locations where you will have plants, shrubs, or trees. Determine what the sun, shade, and soil conditions are in each. This will help you find the species and types that will fit well within the parameters and ensure the final look that you are hoping for.

There are some standard layouts that professional landscapers will use - radial, curvilinear, rectilinear, arc and tangent, and irregular. The names refer to the geometric shapes and how the garden is laid out. The finished effect should appear natural in it's consistency and harmony. When viewed as a whole, the garden should appear ordered and plants and decorative pieces should be laid out in a pleasing manner.

Whichever layout you decide to go with, you have endless options. You could create raised flower beds full of fragrant and colorful flowers or a veggie and herb garden where you can grab fresh items for your dinner every evening. Decide what your goals are and then start doing research to decide how to lay out your garden.
