Wear your baby with pride!
by Aaron Green
Some parents want their babies close to them at all times, whether it be because they want to experience those close bonding moments or purely from a practical viewpoint. Because of this, baby carriers are becoming increasingly popular amongst mums and dads.
Some baby carriers can even be used for children up to toddler age as they can put the weight squarely on the hips, although many parents will choose just to use one while their baby is still small and light enough to carried everywhere.
'Wearing your baby' can quickly calm an upset child and experts say it can also help reduce a mother's risk of developing postnatal depression. Expert paediatricians advise parents to carry their babies as much as possible, beginning right after birth in published journals.
Not only are your arms and hands free to get on with day to day chores, but your baby is comforted and close to you at all times
There are several types of baby carriers on the market depending on your needs. Slings are worn over the shoulder and across the body, supporting the baby inside. Usually only used until a baby reaches 10lbs or so, they provide support for baby and are great for mums who are breastfeeding. They are available with or without padding and also have fully adjustable rings to suit individual body shapes.
Similar to a sling, wraps are also made up from a large swath of material and wrap around the body and both shoulders, providing a little more stability and weight distribution. They can be worn in a variety of ways to suit your needs and are also a great option for mums who wish to breastfeed discretely. They can however, be a little time consuming and tricky when putting them on and taking them off and like the sling, you may not wish to use them when your baby gets a little heavier.
A front carrier consists of two padded shoulder straps supporting the seat in which you child will sit and will be suitable for children from birth up to toddler with a variety of style available to suit your needs. A baby in a front carrier will be facing inwards, leaving your arms and hands free. They are very popular for when parents are out and about but might not be ideal for breastfeeding mums. However, once your baby is able to support their head, you can turn them outwards to face the world - some front carriers offer the option of being worn on the back for when your child gets bigger, offering a great view for them too!
Baby carriers are becoming a firm favourite for many dads as well, who are now able to spend long periods of quality one to one time with their children. It is convenient and provides a great way for dads to bond with their child, allowing dad to cuddle up with baby even while he's sitting at his desk working. What could be better than that?!
