My Secret To Crafting a Life Of Better Boating

by Raymond Bordi

If one of your plans is to be able to sail a yacht, you need to develop skills to maneuver your boat first. Do you know how to probably turn your boat if necessary? Because otherwise you will be having problems in handling your boat. In case the sea and wind conditions alter, there are some techniques that you have to employ.

Maneuvering

Essential techniques to maneuver are:

Tacking

Learning when to tack and how to properly employ the tacking technique is important for anyone who wants to learn how to manage the sailboat properly. Technically speaking taking or coming about is when a sailing bells turns its bow across the wind in order to change the wind to the other side. So when a helmsman takes a tacking maneuver it means that the sailboat is steered in the direction of the wind such that it will pass over the bow of the vessel.

Techniques in Gibing

Gibing is one important technique that would require more practice. Unlike other types of maneuvering techniques, this one needs everyone's effort and has to understand the instructions. This technique also needs to carry out their move properly at that specific moment when it is necessary. This is essential so that the boat will not capsize and the balance of the vessel is great while performing the maneuver. The other name for this maneuver is jibe or gybe, and all throughout this maneuver the sheet should be held tightly such that when it is time to perform gibing the wind load on the vessel is decreased and the main sheet can be released from grasp. This will allow the wind to to occupy the sailboat and the right position of the main sheet will be done.

Mooring and Docking

Another essential technique in maneuvering the sailboat is docking. Wind conditions like when it is too windy, ability of the boat to withstand challenges because of its features, whether it is low tide or high tide, the boats in the area where you are sailing - all of these affects how good you are in sailing.

If the harbor is clear and there are not much sailboats in the area, it might be the perfect time for your docking practices. There are many factors you need to consider before starting to dock, and that is the weather as well as the conditions in the harbor. Be sensitive to the condition of the wind when docking. Should you need to do brake, the wind will be the one to provide this to you. Strong winds must be dealt with carefully because they might cause major disasters with other sailboats in the area especially when you are still new.

Mooring techniques can be tricky that most often the movement of the tides has a role. You should always have more than enough length of mooring line for securing your boat to the dock. The range between the low tide and high tide can start from a couple of inches and can be as much as forty feet. To avoid accidentally dry docking your boat in mid-air, always allow a certain slack for the low tide.

It is important to have full control over your boat especially when docking - ensure that your engine is always on. Large boats or yachts usually have fenders that are hung over the sides during docking maneuvers. These things act like your car bumper but are inflated rubber tied off to the rail of your boat in order to protect it. Whether you're docking or getting ready to sail, try to find out where the wind is coming from.

Docking to a pontoon is usually harder than mooring off on a buoy in a river or harbor. One sure way to hook up to a buoy is to have your crew ready for it as you approach it from your bow. The short line of the mooring buoy which your crew hooked up should be tied off on your boats' mooring cleat. A very sturdy rope that is tied to the heavy concrete block lying on the sea bed is what keeps the buoy from going anywhere.

For all of those people who are new to sailing this article should come in handy as it guides them through the essentials of mooring, maneuvering and sailing. I strongly believe that you keep the job halfway done as long as you study the basics before applying them.
