The Origin Of Skull Rings

by Jeremiah Taylor

Throughout the ages the skull has represented death and our own mortality and is still viewed in today's times as a powerful symbol. In the past the victors in any battle would behead enemies to display on stakes as a powerful representation of their victory over the enemy, to create fear and to reduce enemy spirits.

Gothic rings were popular as far back as the 16th century and have survived to the present, rising to popularity as fashion accessories for artistes such as Angelina Jolie and Britney Spears. More commonly skull-embossed can be seen on the well-manicured hands of people in the goth scene and bikers alike.

One of the earliest examples of the skull-embossed ring can be observed in the codices of the cartoon hero, The Phantom, who donned a skull ring, mark of power, protection and mortality. This powerful hero's enemies all had the picture of the skull at their jaws, where he had left his mark whilst giving justice in the form of his powerful punches.

Armies worldwide also adopted the skull ring as a symbol of strength. It was featured prominently in the garbs of the German SS troops and was also used by the British Grenadiers. The skull is a representation of death and perhaps judgment, an inescapable aspect of life that we cannot run away from. The theme here run deep for humanity. Our only certainty besides being borninto this world is that we will eventually die. What we do with the time in between those two events is what makes us lesser or greater males or women.

We are constantly reminded of our own mortality and that only we,ourselves are in charge of our life. The skull ring has embodied the powers of death, destruction and morphing over the past centuries. It signifies the end of old cycles and the evil side of humanity.

Pop culture these days has romanticized the emblem of the skull as a significant force. As an example the cool anti-hero, Ghost Rider. He is a man who morphs during the night time into the devil's bounty hunter, sent to collect the souls of bad males to return them to Hades. He has a fiery skull for a face, his ride is an enchanted bike with a skull headlamp.

These icons in the modern era appeal to our inner feelings of moral justice and further romanticize the image of the skull. Naturally as time go by, that ideal is lost to myth and legend and only a distant sense of the basic idea remains. This is much the case with the skull ring, which appears in many versions throughout various cultures.

As observed with the German SS troops and the British Grenadiers, the skull ring was used to utilized to build a sense of unity amongst a particular congregation. Soldiers and warriors would quickly identify with this symbol of mortality as death is never more than a moment away in the battlefield. The skull ring represents an ever present reminder of our mortality.
