Learning What Aquaponics Is
by Alexandra Smith
To learn what Aquaponics is, it is important to understand first two important words that give meaning to the term Aquaponics. These two words are aquaculture and hydroponics. Let's first discuss what aquaculture means. Aquaculture, in its most literal sense, simply means developing or cultivating animals or plants that live in the water. Aquaculture is not limited cultivating only freshwater animals and plants but includes cultivating saltwater plants and animals. Now let's discuss what hydroponics is. It is the process of cultivating plants in other different solutions but with the absence of soil. It is important for us to discuss first the meaning of these two words since Aquaponics is actually a combination of both. To put it simply, Aquaponics is the process of growing plants and raising fishes in an environment that both the plants and fishes can benefit from each other.
The next question would be how does Aquaponics work? The process of Aquaponics simply works in a method wherein the wastes coming from the fish will be the main supply of nutrient for the plants at the same time the plants will be responsible in cleaning the water where the fish lives in order for them to grow healthy. If you want to understand better the process of Aquaponics, here is a better explanation on how the whole system works. Grow beds is where the plants are planted and grown and this is connected to a fish tank where the fishes are raised. Pipes are used to connect or directly attach the grow beds to the fish tank. This pipes are used for two purposes, one is to pump water from the fish tank towards the grow beds to water the plants and direct the fish wastes towards the plants for them to be used as natural fertilizers. The other pipes are used to return the water from grow beds back to the water tank but this time the water is already cleaned and filtered at the same time is supplied by the plants with sufficient amount of oxygen that is needed by the fishes to grow. The water is initially cleaned by the plants but is filtered using a filtering system that is consist of stones, sands and pebbles.
Below is a list of benefits that one may get in using the Aquaponics method of Growing plants and raising fishes:
- Since the wastes of the fish will serve as fertilizer for the plants that you are growing, you are sure that you are using natural nutrients to provide opportunity for the plants to grow more healthy and without the risk of having harmful chemicals damage your plants.
- Conserves water. With the aid of plants and the water filtering system, water is cleaned and recycled. Thus there is no need to change the water on the fish tank often; you can just a small amount of water to make up for those that are lost in evaporation.
- One may think that Aquaponics system can only grow limited kinds of fish and plants, but another good thing that Aquaponics offers is that you have a wide variety of choices of what kinds of fish or plants to grow.
Aquaponics may be something that not most of the people are familiar with. But this method may be of great help for us to make use of an environment where we can utilize wastes of both the plants and fishes and transform it to be beneficial for each other instead of just throwing it away.
