Most woods ball players I know have strong opinions about speedball and those that play. "That's not paintball, where's the challenge in that?" While tournament players look across the parking lot at us in our ghillie suits and snicker.
Most scenario players should take a page from the tournament players, either spend a day with them or learn from them by watching a tournament game. I swear you will feel inferior in your game skills after a minute performance by the tournament guys. Hey, it's their game and whenever I am out playing I want to be the best player at the end of the day. I am always looking to put another notch in my win column.
Still I think all scenario paintball players should play in tournaments or at least have a full day of 'practice' with them on their field. You may believe that your game is all that but it will only take a few short minutes for a humbling experience to hit you when you step inside the nets with a avid tourney player. It's their game, I agree and whenever I play I'm not looking to win per se but at the end of the day I am a better player. A bruised, sore player but better none the less. (Actually I'm always looking to win)
They have their own signals, hand signals and calls worked out in a communication fashion that puts us scenario to shame, and we can take a lesson in that. When you watch a tourney there is no nonstop yelling back and forth, there is just a quick yell or a hand signal and that's it. On the other hand scenario players yell nonstop, and if we were trying to sneak up on something...we would fail miserably.
Even though we both share the field in scenario ball, they have their side, and we have ours, we can always meet in the middle and learn something to improve our game. But if your dressed up as Darth Vader and you're having it out with Luke Skywalker in the brush, don't be surprised if you "gog" him (shoot him in the head) that the ref turns to you and says. "Nice Shot"
I know that playing in a tournament isn't cheap and no one wants to just pull out a wad of cash and register for the pro category. But signing up for the amateur or novice would be nice for some quick learning. Or you can just ask your friendly tourney team for some practice time with them. They almost always say yes at the sight of a fresh kill err meat but in the end you will learn some valuable assets for better play. And then you can use what you learned when you're out in the woods next time your hiding from the other side.
