How to Handle Separation Anxiety

by Dirk Gruenberg

Separation anxiety in dogs can be a huge problem for both the dog and owner. It is unnatural for dogs to be left alone and confined, and most often they react adversely to being separated from their pack members which in this case is you, the dog's owner.

It should not come as a surprise that dogs suffer from separation anxiety. When you leave, he is likely to worry, maybe even panic. He will then probably turn to chewing on everything that gets in his way, including shoes, clothes, furniture and the like.

So, should you give up your dog because of this? Well, you might choose to, but, really, there should be no need to do so. In most cases, separation anxiety can be handled, so that you and your dog can stay together.

So, how can separation anxiety be tackled? Well, to start off with, please be mindful that your dog is likely to cause more trouble when he has a lot of energy when you are gone.

Think about it this way: Do you think a tired dog would be super destructive? Probably not, so make sure to get him enough exercise before you leave. You might even go for a bike ride and have him run for a while, so that he will be exhausted. When you leave, he will probably be glad to take a nap.

And here is something else to think about: Dogs are smart, and they will figure out when you leave. There will be certain queues that you repeat every time such as jingling the car keys or saying goodbye.

So as soon as they recognize this queue, they start getting excited or depressed. In such cases you need to re-condition them to ignore these queues, by repeating them without actaully leaving.

Just do the following: Perform the queue but do not leave. Do this a few times and your dog will learn that the queue does not necessarily mean that you are leaving.

Of course, it goes without saying that you need to provide your dog with enough water and food when you are gone for a longer period of time. It is essential that your dog has enough of both or else trouble is pretty much guaranteed.
