Dog training can be quite a long process and many people get frustrated because they do not know where to start. Ideally, you would start with some basics commands such as to lie down.
If you can teach your puppy to lie down at early age to some signal or command it'll improve the relationship between you and your puppy.
To start off, you need to put a collar around his neck and attach the leash to it. Then give your puppy the signal for the sitting position.
Make sure to hold the leash in your left hand not far from the dog. You need to stay close for this. Then give the verbal command "down," combined with the hand gesture of showing him your palm.
This will signal the actual down signal to him as you'll be pulling him down using the leash. Immediately you may want to place a treat between his paws while you praise and stroke him or her saying "Down."
Of course, as with all dog training, you will need to repeat this step several times. Keep in mind to always give him the treat and to always celebrate a job well done with a lot of praise.
After repeating this exercise for a while, your dog should get down by himself, without you needing to bend down to him anymore. Hence, you should simply stand upright and give him his command: Both the word "down" and the hand signal.
If, however, your puppy does not lie down where he was sitting, but moves around too much, correct him with the leash. Once he is in the right location again, try it one more time.
Again, the exercise doe take repetition to yield a success. However, if you just stay with it your dog will eventually figure out what to do. Always remember this is a learning process for both you and your dog, so stay calm, and when he gets it right, give him his treat and praise him big time.
