"Casablanca" Isn't the Only Classic Film in the Vintage Arena

by Layla Caltier

As a classic film lover, I've noticed a very disturbing trend. The minute you start talking about vintage films, whoever you're talking to immediately starts drooling, babbling incomprehensibly and, eventually, zones out with a glassy eyed gaze that will have you reaching for the phone to dial 911.

What's the Major Malfunction?

To some people's minds, classic films have an evil reputation much like cream-free chocolate cream pie or low calorie fettuccini Alfredo. There are enough such people to leave a modern audience in a major frown as they view on the screen the words "classic film." These two innocent words inspire an almost allergic reaction akin to peanuts or shellfish of which there is no cure.

They hate the very thought of classic films. They have never seen one and never will.

What Public Domain is Doing to Ensure the Future of Classic Film

If you are one of those who gets excited by classic films rather than nauseated, you have probably taken the time to check out the wide assortment of options out there in the vintage film repertoire. If "Casablanca" is not your style (and if that is true, I am concerned for you), it doesn't inexorably follow that you are also going to shy away from "Cargo to Cape Town," "Cape Fear" or "M."

There are classic films of all shapes and sizes, encompassing all genres, right across the board. The sheer number of options you have when choosing a classic film is mind boggling. And online companies taking advantage of public domain and are doing their best to make sure that finding those classics is easier, less expensive and more convenient than it's ever been.

How? By taking vintage film out onto the web.

The Wonder that is Public Domain

No one grew up without hearing about films like "Casablanca." Some of you may have had to endure watching it many times over. But "Casablanca" remains one of the most, if not THE most, romantic movie ever made, with a possible tie with GWTW. But not all classic films are romantic, far from it. This is where public domain comes in.

The main reason we don't see as much of today's Hollywood blockbusters as we might like is because, well, it costs money to get the licensing rights to distribute them. And a portion of what you make on that distribution goes back to the maker. It's how that little thing called copyright works.

What if we could take copyright out of the arena? What if we could find a way to make it so everyone, everyone, had access to these amazing films? More people would know about them, right? More people would begin to realize that being a classic film buff doesn't mean sitting around with a box of tissues in one hand and a bag of chocolates in the other, weeping uncontrollably as Humphrey Bogart calls out, "Here's looking at you, kid."

Online businesses are trying to bring you around to understand this. They are taking advantage of public domain, the place where films go when they have no copyrights or an expired copyrights to share the love with film buffs in every corner of the world. By doing this, they help more and more film audiences realize that "Casablanca" isn't the only game in town.
