Research on the Intelligence of Dogs

by Dirk Gruenberg

Have you ever asked yourself how smart your dog is or to what extent he can think logically. Well, research shows that, yes, dogs have significant mental capacities.

In one of the researches conducted it was established that digs have a mental ability of close to that of a child of about two years and therefore capable of thinking like one.

The findings revealed that dogs are capable of learning up to one hundred and fifty words, if signals go along with the words. Moreover, some dogs can count up to five and have a general understanding of arithmetic.

Also some dogs were found to be deceitful to others when it comes to getting that they want. This one shows different intelligence levels.

The ranking of different breeds in terms of highest intelligence was as follows: Border collies, poodles, German shepherds, golden retrievers, and dobermans. The last, hence, least intelligent breed, in a list of one hundred were hound dogs. As you can imagine, there are big differences between breeds.

Dogs become good in timing and have good memory in the sense that they always wake and also wake the owner up at the right time. This shows that they work just like an alarm clock and that they know what to do and when to do it.

Moreover, dogs have an understanding of who the boss is. When dogs perceive a person as being higher in rank than they are, they always obey him but when they consider themselves 'better' than somebody then they don't obey their commands. This is why most people abandon the dogs they consider stubborn.

With that being said, if taught well, dogs will understand many commands that their master wants them to perform: Sit, down, stay, and go are the most common.

In addition, dogs are very sensitive to people's feelings. They will know when their pack leader is happy or sad and may try to console them. And, of course, trained dogs will also be able to differentiate between places they are allowed to be and places where they must not go.
