Basic Information About Diarrhea In Toddlers

by Brandon Ferguson

The passing of watery stools in excess of three times in any twenty four hour period, diarrhea can be a symptom of further conditions. As such, it is split into two distinct groups; acute and chronic. A common condition which affects most people at one time or another; diarrhea in toddlers is very common, and rarely a cause for concern.

It is likely that a baby or toddler, up to twelve months age, will suffer from the problem anywhere between two and three times a year; a result of changing dietary habits, body development and minor infections.

In the majority of cases, such episodes will clear up within no more than a couple of days or so and as such is not serious and should not evoke serious worries. Anything lasting longer than this could carry risk of dehydration however.

Therefore, should diarrhea in toddlers last for longer than two days, medical advice should be taken at the earliest opportunity. Further, should it be accompanied by bleeding, or is very persistent, medical attention should likewise be sought.

Diagnosing the problem: There are two types of the condition. The acute type is the one caused most often by an infection. The most common, there is rarely anything to worry about. The chronic type is caused by other health issues. Diagnosing which condition is being suffered is through a simple blood test.

At the first onset, it is advisable that babies and toddlers be encouraged to carry on feeding wherever possible. This stands for both breast feeding and bottle feeding. If necessary, there may be a need for rehydration drinks, though this will be advised by the administering medical professional at the time of diagnosis.

As mentioned earlier, it is unlikely that diarrhea in toddlers is a symptom of more serious issues, so parents should not be preoccupied. It is only when the problem continues for more than two days that medical attention should be sought. Any infections that may be present in the intestinal tract can then be diagnosed and treated.
