Dog Training - Jumping up on People: 101

There are a lot of behaviors most dogs do that are inappropriate and somewhat annoying such as barking excessively and chewing on furniture.

These problems can be quite annoying, but sometimes they are more than that: They can be dangerous, too. Biting, aggressiveness and jumping up on people can be very serious issues. Of course, sometimes we actually might like it when our dog is so excited to see us again that he jumps up on us. But depending on his size and our size that might not be a god idea.

More specifically, if a large dog (it does not to be huge) jumped up on a child or an elderly person that might get seriously injured.

Now, why do dogs love jumping up on people? Well, it seems that there is more than one reason. For example, they may be excited to see you. That is an obvious one, and you cannot really blame him for that. Or he may just want attention that would be another reason.

Or here is another reason: You might have positively reinforced his behavior to do so over time without ever really being aware of it. This, actually, is the most common cause. But whatever the reason is for your dog, it is up to you to correct him and let him know what you want or do not want.

In the following paragraphs you will find some advice on how to do so - on how to stop your dog from jumping up on people.

Imagine your dog launching himself at you. Before he does so, you will most likely know. When he does, just turn away. He might miss, but that would be okay. That way, at least, he would not consider his effort a success. Then just ignore him, because giving him attention would be like a reward, too.

This is very important, because it will let your dog know that jumping up on you will get him nowhere. So, just ignore him when he does, and reward him and praise him when he greets you properly.

Another good way to correct a dog's behavior is by employing the "alternate behavior training". This simply means that you must give your dog something else to do. When you sense that he's excited and will jump at you, simply tell him to sit.
