Have you ever seen your dog eat poop and thought "gross!" Well, mostly puppies display this kind of behavior and with them there is hope they will just grow out of it.
Another group that commonly eats poop are nursing mothers; their behavior, however, is quite understandable: They could not risk their puppies being found by predators, so they "cleaned up" after them.
Interestingly, there actually is a theory out there that suggests that men started domesticating dogs for the very purpose of eating poop - a different kind of waste management. But even if this were the case, today is a different age, and everyone wants to stop their dog from eating poop.
Alright, so what do you do? First, go and take your dog to a vet and have him checked out. This is important because health issues could be causing this frustrating behavior. So make sure your dog is okay, and then think about the next step.
When it comes to altering this behavior, there are two routes to take. The first is by training. One way to alter your dog's behavior is to teach it to defecate in only one area and make sure it only has access to that area when defecating.
Another training routine is to teach your dog the "Leave It" command. The advantage of this command is that it is useful for many other situations besides poop eating.
If you feel that training your dog is too much work, you can also try to make the feces taste really bad, so that your dog will not want to eat it (an approach I do not recommend). This can be done by adding hot sauce or the like.
But do not think that this does not take effort. Theoretically, for the approach to stand a chance at working, you would have to put the hot sauce on all the feces that your dog can get to. This way all of them would taste bad, and he would probably figure out that eating them is a bad idea.
If you have tried to teach your dog anything, you will know that successes do not come over night. Training of any kind takes times, effort, and patience. So be ready to invest those when it comes to poop eating too.
