The costs involved in gardening have jumped dramatically in the past few years. To keep these down and the harvest still worth it, financially, a few things can be done.
Getting the overall expenses of seeds under a bit more control can be done in several ways. Sharing the rising costs with other gardeners is one way to do this. Many gardeners grow the same things in their gardens and buying in bulk can be less expensive. Pay a share of that money and take a share of the seeds. There is instant savings.
If a person is used to making their seed purchases online or from mail catalogues, changing to local purchasing habits could save a lot in shipping costs. Those add up quickly, making the purchase and resulting harvest not so cost effective. If you are already going to town, stopping to pick up your seeds will not add anything to the cost of the seeds.
Thinning seeds that have been broadcast onto the soil in the traditional manner can many times waste plants. Each little seed has the potential of producing an abundance of food for the avid gardener and must be protected. Growing food is not just done for the fun of it, in these days. It may become crucial in the future. Learning how to do it properly now may help to keep you from being hungry later. The packets that most folks buy their seeds in, will have directions for growing them. Follow them for best results.
Trade different seeds for something you do not ordinarily grow, but that you would like to. Other gardeners might like to do the same thing. For nothing more than time involved, many of you could try out new plants.
When considering the age-old activity of saving your own seed at harvest time, remember that open-pollinated varieties will remain true to the original plant, whereas hybrids or crossbred varieties will revert to one or the other of their parent. Heirloom kinds of seeds will keep their characteristics in tact as well. Beware of planting more than one or two or more open-pollinated vegetables or flowers in close proximity or cross-pollination can occur, resulting in characteristic changes. The resulting seeds saved will not be pure.
When saving the appropriately grown seeds from your crop, seal them in airtight containers and freeze them for future use. This will enable one to keep a really good years seed for more than one year. This can be done with packets bought from the retailer as well. Gardening may one day become a crucial element in survival of individuals and their families. Learning now how to grow and save seeds maybe the difference between being hungry and not.
