In order to find value for money and an excellent product, buyers of luxury watches should be aware of what to look for. Buying a watch from someone is often a special occasion. As the purchase is quite often for a partner, child or family member, it is important that the purchaser is aware of what constitutes a good watch.
The transparent protective cover of a watch is known as the crystal. Generally, there are now only two types of crystal used which are sapphire and glass. Sapphire is a relatively rare material and its presence is usually a sign of a quality watch. While glass scratches more, it is much less susceptible to shattering.
Watches with a mineral glass crystal will quite often be cheaper. The best watches will use sapphire crystal which withstands scratches and scrapes a lot more effectively than glass crystals. A glass crystal will scratch much more easily but is a lot less likely to shatter after an impact. As a luxury watch will almost always use sapphire, it is important this is checked before buying.
Although it may sound obvious, the general construction of a watch is a good indication of its quality. The very best timepieces should be made from the finest quality materials. Most watches are made from steel and it is a good idea to check it is grade 316L steel. The steel should also be solid with no hollow areas or folded steel.
The movement of a watch is also a critical factor in identifying a quality watch. The Swiss and Japanese movements are considered to be the best and most accurate around. Those timepieces with mechanical movements will be more expensive than the ones with a quartz movement but both types will provide excellent time-keeping.
The general look and feel of a luxury watch should also be checked closely. This will normally involve the buyer getting a feel for the piece as well as wearing it. The clasp and buckle should operate in a smooth fashion and not make unnecessary noise. There should also be minimal noise when moving around with the watch on. Reputable sellers will always allow a customer to try a watch on.
