Golf swing analysis has usually been done purely visually. When video came around the analysis was aided with that ability to watch over and over. Then with slow motion things get even better. In this article I want to discuss an additional and very powerful new way to learn using a different form of golf swing analysis.
The new technology that I see we can use in golf swing analysis and learning is the Trackman Pro golf launch monitor. Originally used as a club testing and club fitting tool it is now emerging as a great teaching aid. In the hands of the right pro you can improve your swing tremendously with the help of the Trackman.
So here is how it works. Trackman takes detailed data about the ball flight and your swing. Things like ball speed, swing speed, launch angle, angle of attack, etc. You can learn to affect these numbers and see how your efforts affect the results of your shots. A pro that knows how to use the Trackman can create optimal numbers to try to attain on the read outs that will equate to perfect swings. Get the numbers and you have the swing.
The way this works is very cool. As you hit balls and get feedback on the data you will focus in and try to "correct" the numbers toward you optimal result. You can take one aspect and try to get it right. Let's say your swing path is inside out 2 degrees. Your optimal is 1 degree inside out (as you and your pro decided). So you swing out 3, swing out 1, swing out 4. You step back, you and your pro discuss it and you try again. You swing inside 3 (good but, oops too much), swing 0 path, swing inside 1 (bingo), swing inside 2. Okay, I'm sure you get the idea.
Now you are learning by feel and feedback. You sort of sense what to do. It is more like how we learned to do things as kids. It works.
There is an interesting trust factor the Trackman provides. When your pro gives you feedback it has an element of perception and possible human error. The Trackman is definitive and very precise. So corrections can be measured tightly instead of generally. All of this adds to confidence and certainty.
The Trackman golf launch monitor was designed to do more than just be a good club fitting tool. It has the precision and data collection capability to help with golf swing analysis. Used properly by a good golf pro it is an invaluable to for swing improvement. Find a pro that can put you on one and help you develop your swing.
