3 tips for anyone growing bored with playing the guitar

by James Bradley

It doesn't matter how much you love to play the guitar, at some point you are probably going to get bored with it. Most of the time it is just a temporary stop and you get back to playing, but if you don't try to make it fun again then you do risk stopping playing for good.

Below are three ways that I have found you can make playing the guitar fun again:

Master a different style of playing: When you start off playing the guitar then you typically just play whatever the course you are learning from teaches you, or whatever your tutor asks you to play. Once you get past the learning stage and you have the confidence and the skill to start playing songs by yourself then you will inevitably choose songs you like, and then probably stick with that style of song.

Don't be afraid to try something new though, you could try something like classical or even Blues. Ok you might not actually like that king of music, but that doesn't matter, it is about trying something new and learning new techniques and skills to improve your own playing. To get started then all you need to do is buy some Blues guitar books and they will take you through the skills you need to learn and give you a range of songs that you can start to learn from and practice with. Give it a try, you never know you might discover you really like Blues music!

Find a band to join: For a lot of people then the only reason they want to learn an instrument is so they can join a band and hopefully from there start to record music and make it big. If that applies to you then this tip won't help you much, but there are people out there who have never really wanted to be in a band. While it may not have appealed to you when you first started learning the guitar, maybe you could give it a go now?

You will find a new group of friends to hang out with when you join a band, and it will force you to do things you haven't done before and move out of your comfort zone. It is moving out of your comfort zone which will make playing the guitar seem fun again, and who knows you might start to find success and get a record deal!

Try writing your own songs: Once you are comfortable reading music and playing the guitar, then you are ready to take the next step and start to write your own tunes. It can be quite an intimidating thing as you worry what people will think of it and you worry that your songs will be awful and get laughed at, but writing songs is a gradual process where you improve and sculpt your song over time so don't expect to make it perfect first time.

Sit down one night and just start strumming away and find a tune you think is catchy, then write that down and start to add in words that you think match the tone of the tune. The more you work at then the more the ideas will come to you, and once you have that first bit down on paper then you can start to add to it and tweak the words that go with it until you have your very own song to enjoy.

If you do want to learn a new style of music then you can find a good list of Blues guitar books at BluesGuitarBooks.org.
