Prenatal Health

by Julie Steed

When you find out you are pregnant, the first thing you need to do is ensure you have a great healthcare practitioner. If this is your first baby, it can be pretty daunting to know where to turn. Ask friend and family to help.

It helps if you have a mother or other female family member to approach, but even then, medicine and especially the process of birthing has changed quite a lot in the last few years.

As soon as you get a positive on your pregnancy test, go to your doctor. In some countries, doctors will be the primary career throughout pregnancy whereas in others you will be put into a midwive's care. It pays to do your research. If midwifery practice is not common in your country, visit some clinics and get a feel for what you would prefer. Make sure that your midwife is fully trained and remember that in most western countries midwives are absolute experts in prenatal and postnatal care.

In some countries you have a choice of whether you want to work with a midwife or a doctor. In other countries you are assigned a midwife practice and will only work with a doctor if a labour intervention is required.

Who you choose to be your primary carer is up to you, try not to be swayed by the media on this one. There is a long term battle in the medicinal sector that aims to depict midwives as cauldron stirring voodoo women, not so. Midwives train for four years until they are able to practice and their knowledge of birthing is expert.

There are other healthcare practices that will benefit you during pregnancy. Acupuncture is a great non invasive treatment that can help with pain, fatigue, nausea and discomfort. Acupuncture is also known to help naturally induce women and ripen their cervix for delivery.

A combination of alternative care, pain relief and treatments will help you with a smooth pregnancy. Remember to treat yoru body well and enjoy good and nutritious food.

It is important to only use practitioners who have experience working with prenatal health. Make sure you ask your midwife for a recommendation and make sure your practitioner is well aware of your condition.
