A Cursory Look At White Coated German Puppies

by Heinz Kaufmann

The German Shepherd dog is available in different colors and coats. One type is the white German Shepherd dog, which was produced initially as a show dog and companion. Another name for this kind of dog is the Swiss Shepherd dog because it was first registered in Switzerland and is often known as the Berger Blanc Suisse.

They are often times known as wolf dogs because they are mixed breeds. They attained fame not only because of their muscular size and wolf like snowy coat but because of their cleverness and grace as well.

The first variety of this breed dates back to 1882. In 1917 German Shepherd was registered as a breed of canine. These types were imported to the US in the 1920s by H.N Hanchett of Minessota. White varieties of this breed were prevalent on litters during the first 15 years of breeding.

Although the white color is quite common it is regarded a distinct bloodline of the German Shepherd. The dog was originally developed in Germany by a cavalry officer who aimed to create pure bloodlines that preserved the characteristic strength and temperament of the dog.

Initially the white color was banned in the United States for show dogs completely in the year 1968. However, in Germany during the same time the white dog was banned and the numbers were drastically brought down as it was believed to be a result of genetic defects like albinism.

This was a health defect prominently evident in different litters of the breed and resulted in the paling of the color of the breed. But, the same gene that is used for creating the white coat has been identified as MC1R gene locus and brings out every other color combination in the dog. Hence it has no correlation to the genetic defect of albinism.

In 1969, an organization endeavored for the white German Shepherds was formed. It extended internationally in 1977. Later on, these types were considered as a separate breed in Denmark, Netherlands and Switzerland.

The white German Shepherd has a stark white coat and the hair is longer around its neck. It should have colored eyes, eyelids as well as footpads, and a black nose. The coat is normally snow white but it can also have broken colors. In the winter the dog can lose the color of its nose, but this should reappear in the summer months.

White German Shepherds are very dynamic and lively that makes them perfect as pets. They make good companions for lively individuals because this type usually wants to play. Aside from its striking appearance, white German Shepherds are also blessed with unrivalled physical strength. Unlike other breeds, it always longs for action and adventure. It is essential that owners provide them their own playground to prevent destruction if it's kept inside the home.
