Gardening is a great hobby. Not only does it provide the tangible, edible benefit of delicious fresh produce right from your backyard, but it's also a fantastic way to spend some time outdoors getting exercise and relieving stress. If you'd like to start your own garden, read on for some advice.
You need to make sure to wear sunscreen when you are gardening. It is important to apply a generous amount of sunscreen on a regular basis when you are gardening so that you can protect yourself from the rays of the sun. Sunscreen should be applied more than just one time throughout the day.
Use plants and accents with the colors of white and cream in your garden. Using these colors in your garden creates a luminous effect, reflecting much more light than other colors. In many ways, a white garden is more lovely at night than it is in the day. Plants featuring this color are fairly easy to place around other plants, as they combine nicely with both warm and cool colors. Good choices are nicotiana, which has a heavenly fragrance, white clematis, variegated hosta, baby's breath, shasta daisy, sweet alyssum and japanese anemone.
Use mulch around your plants to help retain moisture and prevent the growth of weeds. You can buy mulch, but you can create your own by using grass clippings or leaves. You can even lay down plastic sheeting and plant your plants in holes in the plastic. All these methods help the plants retain the moisture they need for growth and reduce the chances that weeds will grow.
When you are watering your garden you should use soaker hoses, instead of using a hose that produces a spray or a sprinkler. This is because when you water your plants, the water should reach a depth of about six inches, in order to fully irrigate your plants.
Each year it is important to add at least two inches of top soil or compost to you raised flower beds. This is called top-dressing, and it is important because the old compost from years past has decomposed. The new soil will replenish the bed with nutrients to feed the plants. It takes three years for a raised flower bed to get settled and for plants to get established.
Don't forget to protect your skin while you're in the garden. While gardening you can spend many hours in the sun. Burns can occur easily without you even realizing it. Make sure to wear sunscreen. A large brim hat, long sleeved shirt, and pants can also help. In addition these clothing items can protect you from painful prickers and thorns.
Building a compost pile for your garden is a real treat for the health of your plants. It is easy to build a compost pile and many different types of material can be used to build it, like concrete blocking, stones, bricks, wooden planks, lumber, or snow fencing. If you use wood as the material for the compost pile, be sure to use water resistant wood such as cedar and redwood.
Use natural mulches in flower beds. The mulch effectively suppresses the growth of weeds while adding essential nutrients to the garden. The mulch also aids in water retention, so you do not have to water your flowers as much. Additionally, a mulched flower bed or garden is very aesthetic.
Cover your garden with newspaper at the end of the growing season. Weigh the newspaper down with some heavy rocks. This will help to prevent insects, and discourages winter weeds too. The newspaper will break down in the spring and becomes a delicious treat for the worms in your garden, encouraging them to stick around.
When kneeling to do your gardening you need to make sure that you protect your knees from rocks and sticks that may be on the ground. Kneeling down on a rock could cause serious injury to your kneecap. Getting a knee pad is a simple and easy way to help protect your knees and increase your overall comfort while gardening.
Your home will feel so much more complete once your garden starts growing. As was stated earlier, gardens provide a natural beauty to your home as well as a tranquil atmosphere. You'll also benefit from the stress relieving aspect of the act of gardening. Apply the tips from this article to improve your home and your life!
