Pairing Coffee with Cigars: Finding Complementary Flavors and Blends

by Kayla Kelly

Those who smoke cigars will find that a cigar and coffee and go quite well together. The flavor of tobacco often goes well with many different types of coffees, and if you haven't tried pairing up certain cigars and coffees yet, it can be a great experience. Many people truly enjoy the combination. As cigar smokers know, cigars have different strengths, as well as flavors and scents. The same is true of coffee, so it makes quite a bit of sense that you would be able to create some great combinations of the two.

If you are looking for a certain type of cigar that will go well with a nice cup of coffee, you should try to choose cigars with complementary flavors such as vanilla, mocha, roasted blends, or blends with nuttiness. All of these flavors will go well with coffee, and you may even want to experiment with several different blends so that you can find the one that you like best. Depending on the type of coffee that you enjoy and the blend of cigar that you find favorable, you may already know of an optimal pairing.

When you head into the grocery store, you are going to find a wide selection of coffees available. If you have a grinder at home, you can buy whole beans to grind when you need to make coffee. Some stores even have a grinder right in the coffee aisle that you will be able to use. Fresh beans will often make a better cup of coffee, and you want the best cup possible to pair with your cigar. Check through all of the different options available in the section and choose a favorite.

You will find that Cuban coffees will go very well with Cuban cigars, naturally. However, Cuban cigars aren't readily available, so you will want to pair the coffee with another high-end cigar. Darker coffees are usually going to work well with cigars that have dark wrappers and strong flavors. Lighter coffees can pair well with cigars with light wrappers. Of course, you will find that if you have a good cigar, it's going to taste great with just about any coffee.

You can combine virtually any cigar and any coffee. If you have a cheaper cigar, sometimes a cup of coffee will make it taste better because it brings out the better flavors of the coffee. Likewise, a weak cup of coffee can be made more palatable with a cigar accompanying it. Remember that smoking strong cigars and drinking strong coffee at the same time can produce quite a buzz. If you're not used to it, take it easy. You can easily end up with a serious case of the jitters if you overdo it and, because of that, you will want to make sure you take into account that both nicotine and caffeine are stimulants and you'll want to dial your intake of both a back a little when you're having both at once!
