Spotting Counterfeit Cigars

by Harrison Hyde

Unfortunately, the best way to spot a counterfeit cigar is to know the brand well enough to recognize a fake. If you're new to cigar smoking or haven't tried a particular brand before, you might not recognize a fake right away. To improve your chances, here are some basic guidelines.

First, take a look at the wrappers. A high-end cigar should have a wrapper that's even in color. Make sure the wrapper isn't rough or veiny, as well. There are excellent cigars with both dark and light wrappers, of course, but the color and textures are usually even and smooth. When you examine the cigar, check to see if there's a quality wrapping job. You might not be able to do this if the cigars are in a sealed box, of course.

If you are trying to determine if the cigars you are considering buying are counterfeits, you have a few telling signs that will be able to help you spot the fakes. The first thing that you will want to consider is the price. Finding someone who is selling cigars that they claim are Cubans at a ridiculously low price should set off the alarm bells in your head. It's very likely going to be a fake. Keep in mind that high quality cigars are going to be very expensive, many going to more than $200 per box.

If you enjoy a nice smoke every now and then, you probably know how important that it is to have a good cigar and lighters available to keep your cigar lit. Torch lighters have been used to light fine cigars and counterfeit cigars alike, but you should make sure that the cigars that you purchase are of the highest quality because the taste will reflect that. While many fake cigars have some of the same traits as the high quality cigars, it is important to be aware of exactly what type of cigar that you are smoking so that you can understand the ingredients.

The best thing you can do before you purchase a box of cigars and use your lighters to fire them up is to make sure that you are only buying from reputable sellers. Find a great cigar seller in your area, and you can be sure that you are buying only the best quality cigars.
