3 Fun Family Crafts to Brighten Up Your Child's Bedroom
by Pamela Noble
Your kid's bedroom is a space in the house they can feel is their own, and as mums and dads we want to ensure that space is fun and unique. A smart way to brighten your kid's bedroom is to add some personality and originality by putting up some unique artwork. There are several cool crafts you can do with your children that serve as clever decor and enjoyable projects you can do together. You can take on craft projects for the bedroom that are bigger in scope or little, one hour crafts. These are some original ideas you can run with - don't be afraid to put your own take on them!
Create your own headboard Your kid has a cool theme room with patterned bedding, now all he/she needs is an original matching headboard! Though this is a bigger project, it is straightforward and will really bring the theme of the room together. You can build a headboard which will match the themed bedding to truly add an extra something to the room. The bulk of this project is a parent-only affair but it is possible to get your child to be your helper to feel more involved. Later on get them in on the final touches and as usual let your creativity run rampant!
What you need:
- 3/4 in. piece of plywood cut to fit the bed. We suggest 36 inches high by 6 inches broader than the mattress. This will allow for 3 inches extra on both sides.
- 2 in. foam batting, cut to fit plywood
- Slightly stretchy fabric cut to fit over plywood and foam batting (16 inches wider than plywood oughta do it)
- Constructive adhesive
- Staple gun
- 3 in. screws and mounting brackets
How to do it:
Lay the plywood on a leveled surface. Attach the foam batting to the plywood with constructive adhesive. Take it slow with this to make sure you fasten it straight. Lay fabric out on level surface and place plywood with foam attached face down on fabric. Stretch fabric snugly over the back of plywood and staple on securely, placing staples about 2 inches apart. If you want, decorate the headboard using ribbon, ruffles, fabric paint, etc. Find studs on the wall in the area you want to place the headboard and use mounting brackets to secure the headboard to the wall. Voila!
Make your own unique wall decals You can buy wall decals at your local craft store, home decorating store, or on the web. But if you are looking for a great, simple craft that will save you some money - try making your own! Making your own wall decals means you are held back only by your inventiveness. All you have to do is select a shape to create a stencil of and begin!
What you'll need:
- Big sheets of colored contact paper
- Stencil
- Exacto knife or scissors
- Pen or pencil
How to do it:
Select an image and make a stencil, or if you want multiple layers or colours, you'll need stencils for each one. You can draw the stencil yourself or have your child draw one - or you can print one off on paper and use to trace. Cut out your stencils or images and use them to trace onto the back of the contact paper. Cut the images out of the contact paper employing a knife or scissors. Cautiously remove the backing and place the decals on the wall in the chosen location. No easier way to make a room unique!
3D wall or door sign This is an easy project that's inexpensive and will last a a few years! Use the old classic of papier mache to make a piece of art you can tack onto the wall or bedroom door featuring your kid's name or a word of their choice. Smaller words (5 letters or less) work best for this project.
What you'll need:
- Piece of flat cardboard you will use to mount the design papier mache on
- Newsprint
- Powerful glue
- Flour
- Water
- Multi coloured paints
- Paintbrush
- Safe knife
- Scissors
How to do it:
Lay the cardboard on a flat surface. Mold paper into the shape of the letters for the word or name you would like to use, try scrunching and twisting. Glue the letters onto the cardboard. Mix papier mache paste by mixing 2 cups of flour with one cup of water. Take strips of newspaper, soak them in the papier mache blend and cover the newspaper letters with them, making sure to keep the form of the letters. Use your fingers to shape the letters till you are pleased with the shape, then let sit to dry for a few days. Once dry, use paints to paint the letters and cardboard however you want. Or you can wait for it to dry and use the knife to get rid of extra cardboard by carving the letters out so that they stand alone. Then. Tack to the door or wall or glue on a ribbon the the outer edges and use that to hang. You can let your imagination go crazy with this one and add stickers, glitter, beads, buttons or whatever will stick!
These 3 crafts are just the tip of the ice burg of projects you and your kid can do together to make their space original. Use caution with sharpened tools/objects and be certain to use all safety cautions when doing these crafts. Look for more cool family crafts in new articles!
