Do You Want To Take Better Pictures? Check Out These Ideas!

by Mandy Hannah Sanchez

Although most people think that taking a picture is just as simple as pointing and shooting, there really is an art form to it. Typically, your photos never look quite as good as you imagined they would. However, once you learn the proper techniques, it really is simple to take great pictures.

Set your white balance manually. You can be in control of your own lighting and exposure if you choose your own settings for white balance. By adjusting a camera's white balance, you can change the color and mood of any image.

To add visual interest to a scene, explore different settings to adjust the focus. The f-stop numbers control how wide open the aperture of your camera is when taking a picture. This in turn affects the depth of field. Smaller f-stop numbers mean that your depth of field is shallow, and you can focus on your subject while the background is blurry. This is especially good for portraits. A higher f-stop number will place everything into focus, including the background. This is great for taking a wide landscape shot.

Using the highest quality settings your camera allows gives you much better image quality if you plan to enlarge your photos. It also gives you more freedom to artistically crop the shot to focus on certain details. Lower resolution settings should only be used sparingly. When your photography will only be viewed via a monitor, this option may be sufficient.

Would you like to take some shots of your subjects covered with rain? Mimic the look of rain drops even when it's sunny by spritzing your subject with a spray bottle full of water.

You need to find a suitable subject to photograph. You can have the best equipment and be the best photographer, but if you don't have the right subject to capture in those photographs, your photos will not turn out very well. Think about it for a bit then carefully choose objects that naturally inspire you. You can also look for someone to model and pose for you.

Move in closer to your subject to take a better picture. Getting up close allows you to put a frame around your subject while avoiding any disruptive backgrounds. You also get the opportunity to allow your subject's face to be the star of the shot; this is especially impactful with portraiture. When your subject matter is at a distance, you lose important details.

You need to understand where sharpness appears in your photographs, and how it works. Most of the time, you will be able to see the greatest amount of sharpness right in the center of your lens and image. Sharpness then begins to degrade the closer it gets to the outer edges of the lens and the image.

Low-light photography can be tricky since they have a tendency to blur. To prevent this blurring, hold your hands as still as possible whenever you are taking a photograph in a low light setting. If you have trouble with keeping still, prop your hands on a hard surface. Serious photographers accomplish these shots by using tripods.

There is much thought and technique that goes into a photo. It is more than just focusing on a will-lit subject and snapping a picture. Doing so will help take your photography to new levels.
