How to Organise a Stress-Free Baby Shower
by Alice Johnson
Having a baby is a big moment, but we Brits don't have a traditional way of celebrating. Luckily, the American baby shower has found its way to our shores! Baby showers are a chance for you to make the soon-to-be-mum feel special before her new arrival, and pamper her with gifts! We all know a new baby adds to a family budget, so a baby shower is your chance to help out by buying her things she might need for the journey.
Mums, best friends, work mates or even expectant dads can organise a baby shower. The only person who should not is the mother-to-be! Whether you keep it a secret or not, she shouldn't need to feel any stress.
You will want to make sure that it is at a time which suits everyone - especially mum-to-be! Baby showers can be held any time in the pregnancy, but traditionally they take place in the last trimester, when the excitement over the new arrival is at its height!
As Mum-to-be already has enough to think about, maybe you or another friend will be willing to host the shower? Otherwise, church halls offer generous rates, as well as places such as nurseries and community theatres. Plan in advance and ensure the venue is accessible.
Make sure that everyone she would want to be there is invited. Baby showers are traditionally girls-only parties, but it can be nice to invite the future dad. Think about the people she is closest to; get full names, phone numbers or email addresses at the very least. Social networking sites are also very useful for getting in touch.
Websites like Facebook are cheap and easy for party-planning, allowing you to send invites and get replies quickly. Depending on how big your shower is, you might want to split the budget with the guests or at least a few of her closest friends. Baby showers don't need to be costly; they are all about celebrating the mother and her new baby.
You could also ask everyone to bring a dish each. Make sure you know what everyone is bringing so you don't end up with twenty potato salads! Or maybe you have a friend that is a great cook, and wouldn't mind helping out? Ensure it is safe for the expectant mum to eat as well as everyone else too!
Now all you need to think about is a present! Many parents want the sex of their new baby to be kept a secret. If you know the sex, then you may choose to buy some new clothes or toys based on that. Otherwise, think about pictures for the baby's new room, a blanket in neutral colours or even something that mum-to-be can appreciate.
Above all, baby showers are a time to celebrate a new arrival into the world while having fun. Avoid stress and remember the basics to ensure a good time!
