Swimming In a Sea of Obstacle Events
by Rob Sutter
Competitive events are ones which I normally steer clear of unless I am certain that I can excel in them. I know that there are people who are hungrier when it comes to acting and the limits that you have in the athletic sense may not carry over to those who you're contending with. I try to stay within my comfort zone and only come out of it when I know I can do well. All obstacle events may not be for me but I think that swimming is the one where I can hold my own in.
Swimming is one of my favorite activities when the weather gets warm and I believe the fact that I did it so much as a child helps. I used to love being able to have access to a pool, whether I used the one at home or the public one which was at a park only a couple of blocks away. The ability to move across the water was something that I wouldn't take for granted. To say the least, swimming is my favorite to take part in and I don't see it being trumped.
When swimming on my own, I don't usually push myself unless I make the conscious choice that I need to be pushed. For example, when I'm around the house, I'm usually swimming absentmindedly in laps or attempting to relax with my back against the surface of the water. I think that many people go about doing such things but if you're talking about obstacle events, I believe you're getting into an entirely different ballgame, in a matter of speaking. These sorts of events, showcased by Spartan Race, will test one's endurance.
Swimming is the kind of event that calls for a higher level of vitality, or at least that's the way I see it. Compared to land, I think that water is far more unpredictable since you have instances of waves which may come in patterns that you're probably not ready for. In addition, think about how you must keep your head above the surface, staying afloat by utilizing your legs and arms. Technique and strength seem to come together to show what these athletes can do.
Whether it's through leisurely activity or strenuous action, there's no question that I love the water. I feel about as home underwater as a fish and I feel like that comes from many years of having a place where I can hone that ability of mine. If I had the ability to grow gills, you better be certain that I would have taken it up without hesitation. Until humans grow such body parts, I think that I will have to settle for what we have now, which is fine by me.
