Lacquer Work Methods Of Dunhill Namiki

The finding of the art of lacquer dates back approximately 9000 years ago. Japanese craftsmen found that the juice of a Rhus tree formed a tough and durable material. This substance can be used like paint when wet, and becomes very durable when dry. Mixed with pigments, vibrant fade-resistant colors can be made. In order to carry things, a small box, which hung from a string and worn like a belt was developed by the Japanese. Boxes such as this were perhaps the most popular items to be designed with lacquer.

Over a long period of time, the fine art of lacquer has been utilized in paintings, prints, and an amazing array of objects from Buddha statues to bento boxes. During the 1920s and 1930s, Dunhill and Namiki established the work and application of lacquer methods to fountain pens, lighters and cigarette cases.

Dunhill Namiki was established by Alfred Dunhill and Ryosuke Namiki. In 1918, Ryosuke Namiki founded the Namiki Manufacturing Company which produces pens and nibs. Namiki perfected the lacquer methods on pens and decided to showcase his delicately decorated and expensive products across the world. The manager of Dunhill's Paris store, Clement Court, was impressed by the works of Namiki on the pens that he decided to market these. Thus, Dunhill Namiki was formed.

The cost of pens nowadays ranges from few hundred pounds to a astounding hundred thousand pounds. Pens having simple landscape scenes with plenty of undercoated black background are generally known as "C" grade pens. They can be charming and are the most affordable, usually fetching mid-high hundreds of pounds, determined by the success or rarity of the decoration. The more the pen is decorated the greater its worth. If the pen is completely covered with design, it becomes an "A" grade pen, which is the most costly today.

Aside from the designs, the size and the artist influence the value of the pen. Larger pens tend to be more precious and pens made by well known lacquer artists are much more expensive.
