The design and popularity of charm bracelets has certainly evolved over time. Gone are the days when they were crude little things bought by soldiers as souvenirs. These charms were low-quality and cheap to make. The idea was simply to have a memento of a different time and place. It was during the 1950s that the idea of collecting charms really took hold. Pandora was really the market leader in taking this idea and patenting it. What Pandora did was to develop bracelets and charms with threads on them, much like you would find on a screw in a hardware store. These threads meant that Pandora charms would not fit onto rival branded bracelets. These threads also ensured that charms could be fitted onto the bracelet without fear of sliding off.
In addition, the majority of charm makers provide various clips and spacers. A clip is a smaller sized charm that stays in a fixed placement on the bracelet. It is a way the customer can grouping charms together on their bracelet. These new forms of charm design are employed by companies such as Links of London, Aagaard and Lovelinks.
Europe undoubtedly heads the pack with respect to the number of charm manufacturers. However, the craze of charm collecting is now hugely popular in North America. The major appeal of these modern-day charm bracelets is their adaptability. Bracelets are still sold as chain links. These bracelets can only take a small quantity of hanging charms. The snake chain bracelets are now the most common type of charm bracelet to buy. They are popular due to the number of charms they can accommodate. The bracelets are usually available in polished silver, gold, oxidised silver and occasionally leather.
Likewise the charms are made out of a number of different resources. This can have a knock on effect with regards to their sale price. Most charms are manufactured from sterling silver. But there are also a wide range made from murano glass and wood and 14k gold.
