An Overview Of Spun Glass Figurines
by Kathryn Neal
Spun glass figurines are very collectible items and have been a particularly popular collector's item for many years throughout history. Many people become so enthusiastic that they watch out for the latest figurines to add to their collection. They are made by heating rods of glass and then bending and stretching the fine filaments before they cool and harden. The figurines may be made to be clear all over or may be coloured to provide even more interest. A bunch of flowers, for example, being held by a figurine or blossom entwined in a fairies hair may look very different in colour rather than just a clear finish. Some items lend themselves to remain clear and would not be so effective in colour.
This type of material lends itself to the creation of fantasy items such as angels, elves, fairies and dragons. A common item is Cinderella's g;ass slipper or her carriage. The carriage may be designed to include the horses. Either of the pieces may be manufactured to include pieces of gold or silver to make them more attractive.
The delicate nature of this material makes it ideal for portraying romantic jewellery and ornaments. These include roses or hearts and bouquets of flowers in baskets. A flower displayed in a single stem vase. Gifts for special occasions are often created in this way including gifts to celebrate 'New Baby', 'Engagement', 'Wedding Day', 'Mother's Day', Christmas', and 'Retirement'. Filigree baby bootees are often given as a gift when a new baby has been born. In some designs it is possible to add pink or blue ribbon.
Very often the figurines are mounted on a glass base which may be made in silver or gold to show the attributes of the figurine in the best way. Some figurines incorporate birthstones. Others are designed as all types of animals or tropical fish, even including whales and dolphins.
Many older items which have been created in this type of glass can be found at auction. This method of production has been used for many years and examples can be found across most eras.
Some figurines have been placed inside glass ornaments or bowls. Some contain LED's for the production of light or lights. Larger designs are created as table lamps or vases in many shapes and finishes.
Storage of these collectibles is important, not only to protect the fine strands that they are made of from breakage, but also so that the fine details do not become covered in dust. A soft brush can be used to clear the more intricate parts of household dust.
Most manufacturers of these pieces will provide advise about the best method of cleaning the item. These instructions should be adhered to as although the piece may be made mainly of glass other material may have been incorporated. For example if gold, silver or other metallic substance has been included in its manufacture the metal could become tarnished if not cared for properly.
The fine filaments of glass used for the creation of these pieces also have other uses. They can be used with plastics or polyester resins where strength is required
The product is not only used to make spun glass figurines but is also used in the manufacturer of textiles to provide a sheen. This is achieved by weaving the filaments in linen or wool.
