How To Set Up Your Own Garden Fountains
by Nita McKinney
When many people think about garden fountains they picture statues made from concrete splashing out water. Having such an image might make you think that it is difficult and expensive to install your own fountain. However, this is not entirely true. You can make a garden fountain using a water pump and various materials around the home. Any object that holds water such as an urn can be used.
The idea behind a fountain is spilling of water on the sides of a container so that it can be collected in a basin found below and recycled using a pump. To build your own fountain you need to buy a water pump and a rubber plug. You also need a shovel, a plastic basin, a vessel to hold water, a drill, garden rocks, cutting shears as well as metal screening.
The first step to building your own fountain is deciding on a suitable container. Find a good vessel for holding water. A decorated urn can make a good container for this purpose. Drill a hole at the bottom of the vessel if it does not already have one. This is the hole that will be used to pass the water tube and it should be approximately 2 inches.
Dig a hole that is wide and deep on the garden where you want to build your fountain. The plastic basin should fit in the hole and it should be wide enough to trap the water that will spill out. The plastic basin should be positioned in a way that the soil line is at the same height with the top of the vessel.
Place a piece of metal screening on top of the basin. It is advisable to make the screening wider than the plastic basin. Make a hole at the center of the metal screening using cutting shears. Ensure that the hole you cut is large enough to accommodate the power cord and the water tube.
Position the water pump on the floor of the water basin. Pass the power cable and the water tube through the hole on the metal screening. The screening should then be placed on top of the basin.
The fountain plug should be able to create a perfect seal. After sealing the hole place the base on the screening. Connect the power to an electrical socket to get the device working. It is good to hide the power cord behind rocks and plants. Alternatively, you can bury it a few inches below the ground.
Fill the basin as well as the receptacle with water. You can use garden rocks and stones that are colored to conceal the metal screening. If everything is set up properly the fountain should function as expected. The water should spill over to the rocks below into the basin where the pump is located. It will then be recycled.
