The field of lapidary basically involved three methods of working with stones or minerals. They either cut stones into sides that are faceted, polish the stones as in the case of cabochons, or use a tumbler to smooth out edges. The skills involve using precise tools such as cutters, saws, grinders and sanders. Gem collectors, hobbyists and jewelry designers all deal with making cabochons.
Once the initial piece is chosen, a pattern is edged into the stone which is then cut out. Choices are made dependent on what the stone will be used for and the size needed. A dop stick is attached on the smooth side with wax where the stone is then polished until smooth. The last process step is the heated removal of the dop stick. The beautiful stone that results from the process is used to make jewelry by placing into a setting made of metal and wire.
The polishing process bring out the natural features often found in the stones. Jewelry designers love to incorporate stones that have a lot of patterns and lines and will choose stones that are best suited for the pieces they are creating. The transformation that occurs from start to finish is amazing and the jewelry that is created is unique.
Softer gemstones are the usual choice for making a cabochon. Many have scratches or imperfections that can be removed with polishing. The natural variations found in the softer stones are perfect for making a cabochon. A popular choice is agate which has many striations and come in a variety of colors.
Harder gemstones such as diamonds are better used for jewelry by cutting facets. The facets reflect light. This gives the gem a sparkle and brilliance that is not apparent if it would be made into a cabochon. Because harder gemstones are more transparent, polishing instead of faceting makes it rather dull looking.
