The Unique Sony RX1 Review

by Paula Barron

This Sony RX1 review shows that the camera is very unique; it is a fixed lens full frame mirror-less camera. It has 24 megapixels on a full frame sensor and a very high quality Carl Zeiss 35mm F2 autofocus lens. The camera also does not have a viewfinder, although it has an LCD screen at the back of the camera. There is an optical and electronic viewfinder that are available separately.

So who is this camera for? It has the same excellent sensor as the Sony A99, but a fixed lens. So the uses for this camera is limited. It would not be a good camera for wildlife or sports, and its uses for landscape could be limited if a wider angle is required. With the fast 35mm lens the camera is clearly aimed at the street photographer or photojournalist, for whom a fixed 35mm lens is enough.

The camera feels very much like a rangefinder when used with one of the optional finders. The camera is simple and more intuitive than the DSLRs, it is also a better option for more candid photography. The sensore performs extremely well as high ISO settings, and the sharp F2 lens makes it perfect for low light. Also being smaller and lighter than most DSLRS it can be handheld at lower shutter speeds. It does not have image-stabilization like the Alpha 99, but it doesn't really require it.

The 35mm lens is incredibly good, it is still sharp even when wide open. The bokeh is also very good and buttery smooth. The lens has no problem with making the most out of the 24 megapixel sensor.

Autofocus speed is reasonably fast, not as snappy as a DSLR, but fast enough for the main uses for this camera. Color is also extremely good, as well as the dynamic range. This makes the Jpegs from the camera extremely high in quality, although professional photographers will want to process RAW files in a high quality processor, such as Lightroom or Aperture.

Th RX1 is not a cheap camera. It is more expensive that the Fuji X-Pro 1, or XE1 camera, which have interchangeable lenses but a cropped sensor. However it is much cheaper than the Leica M9 or M rangefinder (the camera costs the same as some of the Leica lenses alone). So photographers who rarely shoot with anything other than a 35mm focal length may see this as cheaper option than the Leicas with similar image quality.

Shooting with a 35mm lens only can also be very liberating, and makes photographers think about the process of creating images differently. Sometimes having too many options can restrict the creative process. Fine art photographers in particular may be very interested in this camera, and documentary style wedding photographers may love the cameras ability to catch the decisive moments during a wedding day.

Every Sony RX1 review demonstrates that this is a niche camera, but it a spectacular imaging device. It is small, easy for experienced photographers to use that is capable to producing beautiful photographs in the right hands.
