Fun Facts About Babies You Might Not Have Heard

by Silva Carvalho

Many people assume that babies are only about diapers, breast milk (or formula) and long naps. Have you learned why babies' bodies move the way they move? Have you been taught why a baby grows in certain ways at certain times? Most parents don't bother learning the specific of their child's development. Other parents decide to learn everything they can about the way their child grows and develops as it gets older.

It is hard for most babies to tell the difference between one color and another when they are still very young. It takes a while after being born for a baby's eyes to finish developing and for the synapses from the eyes to the brain to be fully formed. This is why rooms painted in primary colors and toys painted or made of primary colored fabric are usually better received by babies. Black and white as well as bolder colors like red and blue and green and yellow are best for babies. It is difficult for a baby to tell the difference between softer or more pastel shades.

This is why a baby will sometimes choose one toy instead of another. This means that all of those black and white decorations that you scoff at (for various reasons) are actually better for your baby's eyes than the pastel and soft colored decorations you were planning to use. Most people already accept that babies are able to hear sounds even before they are born. Studies have been done proving that sounds carry through to the womb and that babies can have strong reactions to different sounds. It does not matter when the baby is born, his ears are still very sensitive to high decibel levels of sound while he is in the womb. You can hurt a baby's ears even before he is born! Most doctors agree that while a woman is pregnant and that while her baby is still young that she keeps all of the sounds in her house to levels quieter than her vacuum cleaner. You will soon learn that even your vacuum cleaner might be too loud for your baby so keep the noise level to a minimum and try to avoid heavy traffic or construction when you leave the house as it can be too loud as well.

Even while they are in utero, babies can identify music. By the time a woman is thirty four weeks into her pregnancy the unborn baby can identify different sounding songs. A baby can spend more than a month in utero listening to and appreciating different songs. Some mothers even report that their babies will move in time to the beat of certain songs. This could mean that a person's musical taste is instinctual instead of conditioned. Aren't you excited about that?

While most doctors recommend against consuming mercury while a woman is pregnant, eating non mercury forms of fish can be quite healthy. Many doctors recommend eating salmon regularly because it does not contain mercury the way other fish do and because it contains all sorts of healthy things that a mother needs for her growing fetus. It is believed that eating fish both improves the brain function of a fetus and sets them up for superior communication skills later in life and that women who do not eat fish will not be able to pass these things along to their children. If you do not eat or particularly like fish, don't worry-none of this has been scientifically proven as fact yet.
