Win At Chess By Knowing The Names Of Chess Pieces And Their Role In The Game

Chess consists of two opponents who are each supplied with pawns, knights, bishops, rooks, one queen and one king. These numbers are per player. You must put the other enemy king in checkmate to win the game. A king is in checkmate when there is no possibility of his evading being overtaken. Each move is decisive and each piece is as paramount as the next. You can win by knowing the names of chess pieces and what they mean.
The first pawn move can be either one or two squares but only toward the opposing side. After that, it can only move one square forward at a time. Your pawn can only move forward and it can only overtake an opponent piece that is one square diagonally in front of it. A pawn may be of low rank but as you will learn through study and playing, they are quite valuable in defending the higher ranks.
Knights are different to the other pieces in that each move consists of two directions. You will not move the knight just forward, backward, or sideways. Rather, you will move over a total of three squares that will have made an L shape. For example, your knight can move forward one square then left or right two squares (and you will have made that imaginary L shape). Only knights are permitted to move over the other men on the board.
The two bishops you are given may move diagonally. This straight line movement has the benefit of being able to move over as many squares as you choose. Jumping pieces is not allowed. As with most of your other pieces, bishops are not allowed to jump over other men.
Rooks are very powerful. They may move in any direction except diagonally. They can move over any amount of squares per move. The rook is another piece that cannot leapfrog over other men on the board.
As long as the queen does not leap over her own men she can move in any direction she chooses. She may also utilize as many squares per move as she desires. The king is the most important piece, as you must not allow him to be captured. Though very important, he is only granted one square (in any direction) per move.
With practice and a small amount of study you may start to play with some basic knowledge of the game. You will learn powerful maneuvers and gain a real sense of accomplishment. Follow the rules and win by knowing the names of chess pieces and what they mean.
