Fun Crafts & Art Projects For Children

While it is certainly true that craft projects and art time are a great way to keep little ones busy, there are many other positive benefits of art. Children must make decisions while creating a craft or work of art, which improves their ability to solve problems. Children often have difficulty verbally expressing emotion but can often work out their feelings while creating a work of art. Fine motor skills also are improved when children have to sculpt, cut, tear, paste, paint and draw.
There is no reason why you can't provide children with paper and crayons or a bunch of paints and let them create whatever they want. Sometimes it's fun to have an actual theme or project. For instance, you can download a mural template and have them color each section. These templates can be found on internet sites like ArtProjectsForKids.org for about $5 and then instantly downloaded and printed.
These templates come in many different styles and some of the most popular feature famous artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Joan Miro, Paul Cezanne and Wassily Kandinsky. There are also nature-themed pictures and holiday-themed murals to consider. Because the mural is divided into squares, children can complete just a little bit at time. When all the squares are complete, you simply arrange the pieces correctly and position them onto a larger piece of paper or other surface. You can use these murals to help you teach your children about a variety of art styles as well as learning about famous artists.
After the mural is complete and decorating a wall, use it as a springboard and jump out into other similar art projects. For instance, maybe your mural featured a vivid Georgia O'Keefe flower painting. Grab a book filled with O'Keefe's work from the library and then head to a nursery or flower shop and purchase one of your child's favorite flowers and have them create a painting or drawing based on that flower. If your children enjoyed the Andy Warhol can painting, have them consider creating a work of art on another type of product.
Cool art projects are an excellent teaching tool, and you don't have to be studying famous painters. Instead of just looking at a map of the United States, why not download a PDF template and have your children create a huge, colorful mural of the United States. Another idea would be to use art to learn the letters of the alphabet or create a mural of an important American while you are studying the person in question. Art can be used in virtually any subject area as a creative approach to teaching.
Don't forget to create some fantastic 3D art projects, as well. This might be a clay figurine or perhaps a collage featuring all the different leaves and grasses and seeds in your yard. Have your children design their own recycled wrapping paper or create a giant paper mache bowl. Design a robot using only items found in your recycling bin, and then ask the children create a poem or story about the robot. The possibilities are endless and guaranteed to make your children happier and it is all certainly far more engaging than watching television or playing a video game.
