Making Colorful Quilts With Novelty Quilting Fabric

by Marla Mills

Children love color, and they also love games. Combining color and novelty quilting fabric to make a truly unforgettable child's quilt and game experience is fun, easy, and rewarding. It will also create endless fun and learning for children.

The first thing to decide before deciding on a pattern for the quilt, is the quilting material. Choose bright colors, and fun objects and shapes, and of course, novelty fabric. Materials can be a child's favorite cartoon, shape, or animal. They can be themed, or random.

After choosing just the right fabric, beginning cutting pieces into square of five inches. Scrap material can also be used, carefully cutting into five inches. Now make the pattern by arranging pieces on a table, or flat surface. Fun pieces should be paired with a solid color next to it, and then another novelty piece. Lay the first row in this manner.

Laying beside the novelty patch is a solid, and beside the solid, another novelty patch. The next row will be a solid, a patch with shapes, and a color. The last row will start with patches with images again, a solid, and another image.

Now that the design has been laid out on the table, pick up patch one and patch two to the far left of the first row. Pick them up with material wrong side out, and lay them on top of each other in this way. These will be the first two pieces sewn. Place them on the sewing machine and make a quarter inch seam. The next two patches of the next row will be sewn in same way, and followed by the far left two patches in the third row.

Once finished, there should be three pieces left on the table. Take the pieces already sewn together and place them face side up on the table. Take the loose patch on the top right and place it wrong side out on top of the middle piece for final sewing. Go back to machine and sew a quarter inch seam. Without leaving the machine, take the next loose piece and place it wrong side up on top of the next row piece, as was done previously on the table. Sew and repeat to the last row, and finish sewing.

With the rows still attached, heat an iron, and begin pressing the nine patch, face side up. Once pressed begin joining the rows by sewing a seam. To do this fold one of the rows wrong side on top of the next row, and sew a quarter inch seam. Do the same to the last row. Press with iron again, and the nine patch block is finished.

Measure block. In the middle of the block, at the 7 inch line cut the material in half. There are now two seven inch pieces. Take one of the pieces and lay it vertically on the board. Again at the seven inch line cut in half. Do the same to the other half. Take the four pieces and arrange them on the table in the same pattern as originally used. Turn in opposite directions. Sew in place. Repeat this for a fun a novelty quilting fabric project for the entire quilt.
