How To Beat Sit and Go

by Don Ladaski

Let's say that you are in a SNG game where you bought in for ten dollar. First place is $45. Second place is $27. And third place is $18. (To learn more about sit & go tournament, check out this article on pot odds.)

There are only 4 players left and you have the second biggest chip stack with 2,000 chips. The chip leader has 7,000 chips. And the other two players has only 10 chips each.

Consider this scenario. The blinds are 50/100 and you happen to be in the big blind and the chip leader is in the small blind.

Everyone folds. The chip leader decided to push all in on your big blind.

Fortunately for you, as he pushes in his chip stack, the clumsy idiot accidentally turns over his cards and you see that he only has a measly 72 offsuit.

You breathe a sigh of relief when you look down at your hand and see that you are dealt a very sexy Ace King suited. You know that your hand will beat his hand 70 percent of the time. You are way ahead.

Would this be a good call?

This is where it gets weird. If you're goal is to win the sit and go then you should definitely call. However, even though calling would allow you to win the sit & go tournament most often, it will actually cause you to lose A LOT of money.

So even though you know you have the best hand, you still need to fold.

Here's the logic behind this.

Since the other 2 players are so short stacked, you are pretty much guaranteed to finish second and win the $27.

This means that folding will actually earn you an immediate $27 profit.

Calling, on the other hand, is not as beneficial. You risk getting knocked out and winning nothing. Not only that but you gain very little even if you do win the all in.

There are actually math calculations that I can do that will definitely show that calling will cause you to lose money in the long run.
