As with any instrument, an interest in the guitar its music and plenty of persistence and practice is the key to learning to play the guitar successfully.
The first and most important thing to realise when starting off learning guitar, is that you are at the beginning of an amazing journey. Stay with it and you will get there. Like most journeys that are worthwhile it may take a bit of time!
Depending on who your favorite band or artist is, although its quite normal to believe you will be able to strum along playing guitar chords to your favorite tunes after only a week of learning, this is often not the case.
The truth is even The Beatles - John Lennon only had four strings on his guitar when learning to play, until George Harrison told him he was missing two! It didn't stop him playing or learning guitar to go on to greater things on his journey!
Putting the correct amount of pressure down to hear each note when starting off playing guitar chords is really important to remember. Early on when learning chords, its common to catch other strings. This passes when you become used to the shapes you need to make with your fingers when playing.
At first its frustrating! But the greatest guitarists in the world all went through it themselves when they were learning to play and you will get past that stage too! So keep at it. Persistence and practice is the answer.
When starting off to learn to play the guitar, it's important you get a reliable instrument to learn with. If you run out and purchase a Gibson Les Paul deluxe with gold plated machine heads to learn your first chord on, you'll have a wonderful instrument but you don't really need such a guitar as a beginner.
Decide what kind of music you would like to be able to play on your instrument before you purchase one. It will effect how much money you spend on your first guitar and is worth researching, especially when you are starting off learning to play guitar.
If you are sure you will become the next Slash, please remember after buying your first guitar how much more money its going to cost to purchase the guitar amps, large cabs you'll also need to be heard!
