Getting HDR Photographs

by Stephani Bannan

Photography is becoming a popular hobby lately, but many people struggle to make the transition from amateur to professional. If your shots are not coming out as crisp as you would like, High Dynamic Range (or HDR) software may be what you are missing. The use of HDR software enables you to create photographs with a more professional looking quality.

While HDR is typically referred to in the realm of photography, it can also describe other types of art media. Dynamic range is simply a term that references the levels of light a particular camera is able to process. The creation of an HDR photograph necessitates high contrast in the original image. Good examples of photographs with HDR potential include a flash of lightning against a black, stormy sky or bright white snow on dark rocks. In order to successfully create an HDR image, you must have knowledge of the concept of bracketing. Bracketing is the process of separating the original photograph into several portions and merging them back together later. Bracketing is essential to creating the distinctive appearance of HDR photographs.

Before you can begin creating these professional looking photographs, you will need to acquire a few things. First you will need to evaluate the quality of your current camera, if it does not allow you to easily change the exposure settings you will probably need to buy a more advanced one. You will also need the camera to stay still, and this is very difficult to do by holding it in your hands, so you should also invest in a tripod. Purchasing software capable of creating these HDR photographs will be the final step.

After procuring the necessary ingredients for a successful HDR photography session, you can begin learning how to create these images. When deciding where you would like to start taking pictures, keep in mind that you will get the best results by shooting outdoors during the daylight. Once you pick out the scene you would like to portray set the camera up on your tripod. The final step to ensure you create the perfect HDR image is to shoot the scene at least 3 times, with a different camera setting for each take.

After you have taken the photos of your scene, you will then have to upload them onto your computer in order to transfer them into your chosen software for creating HDR photography. The type of software you are using will determine the next step. Either you will need to label each photo with its corresponding exposure setting, or the program may be able to simply approximate it for you. Finally, the HDR software will combine all of the photographs together in order to create a wonderful and realistic looking photograph.
