With the growing awareness of roots and pride that occurred in the 1960s and 70s, African American attire began to alter to incorporate cultural elements from Africa itself. Styles of dress and, particularly, fabric became heavily influenced by Africa. The incorporations of ideas and motifs from West Africa became much more common as Black Americans began to show a greater consciousness of where they were really from. African American Attire
The fabrics and materials used in clothing in West Africa became very popular, and were used particularly by women. A material which was called 'Kente' cloth became common, having been adopted from the clothing worn by the Ewe and Ahanti peoples of West Africa. As well as women's dresses, the fabric was also incorporated into designs for many other types of clothing.
The material was used for trousers and T-shirts, as well as cropping up as part of the design of clothes intended for more formal occasions. Bow ties and cummerbunds for dinner suits were one use for it which grew in popularity. Graduating students also sometimes began to use it for their academic robes.
Other, perhaps less flamboyant, themes from Africa have also been adopted into some people's clothing styles. Bright colours continue to find favour among people of African descent in the USA. Beads and other fabrics, such as mud cloth from Mali, have also found favour with some people.
Accessories such as jewellery have also taken on many design features from Africa since those days in the 1960s and 70s. Necklace and bracelet designs have become much more consciously reflective of Africa's cultures. One example of this usage is the prevalence of Adrinka type designs, taken from the philosophies and beliefs of West Africa.
The way in which African American attire continues to evolve helps to show why it has become the inspiration for fashion designs across the world. Young people across the world still look to the Black community in America for inspiration in their style, usually because of the music that they listen to. Although Black Americans had their culture stolen from them thanks to slavery, they continue to influence the way in which the world now dresses.
