The Evolution of Charm Jewellery

by Anita Hale

The significance and characteristics of charm bracelets has evolved as time has gone on. For instance, in times of war, soldiers tended to invest in charms to serve as memorabilia for their partners. Such charms were usually crafted by an indigenous person and were presented to loved ones as a reminder of the place in which the soldier saw action. However, during the Fifties the popularity of charm jewellery extended beyond this as bracelets become popular with children. They enjoyed collecting charms to signify the numerous incidents and special occasions that took place while growing up.

The most recent embodiment of charm bracelets have been predominantly made in Europe, and most notably in Denmark. It was the Danish company Trollbeads that prompted the resurrection of charm jewellery throughout the 70s. These later bracelets were distinguishable from the old ones by their modular construction. This basically meant that charms had been engineered to fit a unique threaded system employed by that specific company. For instance, the charm company Pandora, works with a copyrighted model that means their charms are not going to slide onto competitors' bracelets. Such patented engineering also ensures that charms will fit correctly onto their intended bracelet, enabling them to be swapped around easily.

In addition, the majority of charm companies provide various "clips". These are a sort of simpler charm that remain in a fixed spot on the bracelet. They serve as a method of combining sets of charms and preventing them from twisting along the bracelet. Other labels who apply threading technology as part of their bracelet concept include OHM, Links of London and Chamilia.

Europe clearly heads the pack in terms of producing such charm jewellery. However, they also have demonstrated that they are remarkably popular in the USA. So why the sudden surge in appeal? Well, one reason could be attributed to the adaptability these bracelets offer the wearer. Bracelets are still available as chain links, although these can accommodate a far smaller number of hanging charms. More prevalent are the solid silver or gold bracelets which charms can be twisted onto. These bracelets are typically sold in 14k gold, oxidised silver, polished silver and increasingly in leather.

Today's charms are made with a selection of materials and can greatly affect their sale price. Ordinarily these charms are made from sterling silver, but there are additional ranges made with murano glass, gemstones such as diamonds, enamel detail and in some cases wood that has been ethically sourced.
