How To Make Sock Dolls Without Sewing

by Lucile Jacobs

One of the greatest mysteries of the universe is why it is always only one sock that disappears from the laundry and not the complete pair. Every closet has a collection of socks that are useless because they don't have mates anymore. However, there is a fun use for these lonesome footwear items. You can use them to make sock dolls.

The technique of using socks for making toys is an old tradition in the United States as well as in Canada. Some of the most popular toys made in this way were monkeys, which were all the rage during the latter half of the nineteenth century. Antique and vintage monkeys made from knitted footwear can now fetch good prices at auctions.

There are two main ways of making the stuffed toys. One is to make them out of various socks stuffed and sewn together to form a body, head and limbs. The other is to make them out of one sock only. This is the easiest way to make the toys since it doesn't require sewing. Even children can make them.

You will need a sock. Stuffing material can be stuffing from the fabric store or you can use alternatives like fabric or wool cut up into tiny pieces, cotton wool or even sawdust or dried lentils. You will also need at least six rubber bands, strong thread or dental floss, as well as a pair of scissors, some strong glue, buttons or eyes that you can buy from a haberdasher's, and bits and pieces of wool, thread, fabric cut-offs and anything else you may want to use as decoration for your toy.

Begin by filling the sock with stuffing. Check that it is spread evenly throughout. The amount of stuffing you use will determine how firm the toy will be.

The next step is to form the body and neck. Below the heel, gather and tie the fabric together as tightly as you can. This is the neck and the part below it is the body.

Now grab the one end of the toe and twist it into a ball. This will form the doll's one leg. Use a rubber band to secure it. Do the same with the other end of the toe to form the other leg. Form the arms in a similar way by making balls below the neck, on either side of the body. Ensure that the arms are aligned with each other horizontally and with the feet vertically. If you prefer, you can make the limbs first and then secure the rubber band to form the neck.

Next, add stuffing into the heel part. This is going to be the head, so the amount of stuffing that you add will determine the size of the head. Form the top of the head by adding another rubber band. Since rubber bands disintegrate over time, you may want to tie some heavy thread or even dental floss tightly in the positions where the rubber bands are to replace them. There will be fabric left over above on top of the head. You can cut this into strands of hair and create any kind of hairstyle, from braids to a short, spiky cut. Then use the glue to add the eyes, a mouth made of bits of wool, as well as bits of fabric to form clothes.
