Features To Look For In A Digital Camera

by Mike Thompson

There is quite a large range of digital cameras these days and can just about suit any and every person who is interested in wanting to take a photo. There are cameras for novices that are basically just a point and shoot camera. Other cameras are more advanced and have many more complex features which are aimed at the professional photographer. At any rate, you should think what features you need, what you need to use your camera for and your photography skills before buying a camera.

If you are a beginner photographer, and you will only be using your camera for occasional snapshots of your family or vacation, then autofocus is a desirable feature for your camera. In many cases, the camera can determine the main subject of the photo, such as a person's face, and focus on that.

This feature is also quite handy for the professional as it allows them to give more attention to other parts of the photograph.

One other feature to be wary of is internal memory. It is good to have a camera that can use memory cards to store your treasured moments on.

A camera with internal memory will allow you to store photos on the camera itself, instead of on a memory card. There will be times when you forget the memory card. With internal memory, even if you've forgotten your memory card, you will still be able to capture that once in a lifetime photo. Or even perhaps being able to take one with a baby monitor as demonstrated in this Samsung SEW-3037W review.

When it comes to a fixed lens camera, a feature you should be looking for as well is its zoom factor. Being able to zoom well will allow you to take shots that may not be practically feasible. When considering zoom, you should also keep in mind the difference between optical and digital zoom.

Optical zoom is simply the camera changing the position of the lens to allow focussing of light at different focal planes. This gives you the ability to shoot wide and telephoto images. In comparison, the digital zoom simply magnifies and crops a portion of the photo which is useful to an extent but degrades the photo quality.

Just keep in mind what you need to shoot. If you just want snapshots of your family, then a camera with mostly automatic features will be a good one for you. If you want to take higher quality, artistic or professional level photos then a camera with manual controls, so that you can control every aspect of the photo will be a good choice for you.
