Catfishing
by Diane Spencer
Catching catfish is not only popular in the United States but also in other countries including Canada and most countries in Asia. Some of the reasons for the increased popularity in catfishing is that catfish are a good meal, they can also be found easily either in freshwater and it's fun and easy to do. One characteristic of catfish that makes it easy for people to distinguish them from other fishes in the water is the presence of their barbell which is quite similar to a cat's whiskers. The main purpose of this barbell or whiskers is for sensory reasons. Aside from that, catfishing is easy to do because of the number of available types of baits that you can use in catching catfish. Some of the mostly use catfish baits are shrimps, chicken liver, cutbait, frogs, worms and sucker minnow.
Because most catfish are freshwater fishes, they can be easily found and it will be easy to find a good location to do your catfishing. Aside from that, when fishing for catfish, one can use the most basic equipment used for fishing. Below are some catfishing tips that will help you to be able to catch larger catfish:
-It is good to do catfishing during early fall and spring because water is high due to the melting of the snow and autumn rains and this makes catfish more active.
-So that you will increase the possibility of catching more catfishes, it is recommended that you do your catfishing at dusk since catfish are known to be less active during the day and more active at night.
-Warm water causes catfish to be slow moving and groggy that is why it is advisable to do catfishing during summer nights.
-Areas where catfish typically lurk include fallen trees, hollowed stumps, side banks and base of dams.
-When you do your catfishing at night, it is important to be quieter since there are no daytime background noises to cover up the noise you make near the water.
-It is also advisable that you know information about the different types of catfish as well as their habitat, the baits that they tend to get attracted to and other important facts. This way, you will be able to at least estimate where to do and how to do your catfishing depending on the type of catfish that you want to catch.
-Using a live bait that is able to wiggle and produce water vibrations is important especially if you are planning to do catfishing in still water like the pond or lake since this will easily catch the attention of the catfish.
-Choose to use baits that are fresh since this catches the attention of the catfish more.
-Keeping the hook down under the water and making little to no movement as much as possible is important when catfishing. But if after some time no catfish was able to bite your bait, it is time to look for another good spot to do you catfishing.
