LEGO Battle of Endor Sets - Winning Against The Empire at Last

by Carlton T. Driver

As the Star Wars story unfolds, the Battle of Endor is a struggle which was not at all likely to be concluded in favor of the Rebels. The Empire had a seemingly unbeatable array of machines and weapons that should have given them the capability to smash any opponent - but, somehow, the Rebels and the Ewoks somehow managed to defeat the forces of the Empire that were arrayed against them, and even managed to destroy the Death Star. LEGO has recently released two different sets - LEGO Battle of Endor, and LEGO Ewok Attack, that give LEGO builders and Star Wars Fans a way to recreate this epic struggle on their bedroom floor.

The plot of Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, completes the Star Wars middle trilogy, with the final battle waged by the Rebels and their Ewok allies against The Empire and the forces of the Dark Side. The battle opens as Emperor Palpatine is watching the construction of the Empire's doomsday weapon, the Death Star, which is being assembled as it orbits above the Forest Moon of the Planet Endor.

When the Rebels learned from their spies that Palpatine would be present on the partially completed Death Star, they began to plot a major attack. Their sources were able to confirm that the defense systems of the incomplete station were not yet online. The key to the battle was to knock out the Death Star's defense shield control bunker located on the moon's surface.

Working together, the Rebels and the Ewoks managed to accomplish this objective through a combination of luck and strategy, and so were able to overcome the stronger forces they were fighting against. The keys to victory were managing to capture one of the AT-ST Walkers to use against the Storm Troopers, and a series of clever booby traps developed by the Ewoks. Han Solo operated the captured AT-ST, using it against the Storm Troopers as they advanced on the Bunker. Once at the bunker, Solo impersonated an Imperial Pilot, and convinced the Imperial Forces that they were needed in the woods to chase the Ewoks, who, they were told, were "retreating". That trick gave Solo and the others the chance to gain control of the Bunker, which they then destroyed.

LEGO has created two complimentary sets that depict the key elements of this important struggle. The larger set of the two, the LEGO Battle of Endor set (LEGO 8038) recreates the Shield Bunker, an AT-ST Walker (with "walking action"), an Ewok Catapult, and two Imperial Speeder Bikes. The smaller of the two sets, the LEGO Ewok Attack (LEGO 7956) creates the Ewok's tree fort, as well as a Speeder Bike.

The Battle of Endor, the larger set, contains a total of 890 pieces. Included are twelve mini-figures, including Han Solo, Chewbacca, Princess Leia, two Scout Troopers, several Ewoks, two Rebel Commandos, and one Imperial Trooper. The set features a number of interesting mechanisms. The AT-ST Walker can be made to "walk" - it's not just a stationary model. The Bunker swings opens to provide user access to the inside. The Blast Doors of the bunker are opened by turning a geared mechanism, and the bunker actually has an "explosion feature" so that it can be damaged by an "explosion". Also included in the set's weapons is an Ewok Catapult, which can fling a "stone" as far away as six feet!

The smaller set of the two, Ewok Attack, has 166 pieces, and although it is a smaller set it still has some really nice elements included with it. It models the Ewoks' Tree fortification, which is constructed on two separate base plates; this means that the structure can be opened up to get access to the gadgets inside. At the top of the tree there is a device that drops out "logs" that can be used to trip the Walkers as they pass by. A catapult is also included, plus a flick-fire missile system that can be fired from the inside of the tree.

Taken together, these two sets allow the user to re-create all the key aspects of the Battle of Endor. They make a wonderful combination gift for the Star Wars fan, and for the serious LEGO builder as well, but they also will provide good value as individual sets. These sets are a great example of the growing level of detail and realism that LEGO is incorporating into their dedicated sets. These improvements in turn create a lot of increased enjoyment for the users of these special sets.
