People usually associate a tailor with tape measures, threads, needles and sewing machines. Of course the various tools mentioned previously are very important to a tailor but what's a tailor? A tailor is someone who does repairs and alterations on garments. You'll often find a tailor in dry clean shops, wedding stores, tuxedo stores and department stores. Learning to be a tailor isn't as simple as people think. Tailors have to complete their high school, college and internship in order to become a professional tailor. So, enough with the stereotype of tape measures, threads, needles equal tailors, people should learn and accept them as a real profession.
The capacity of a tailor may vary depending on their job and clothing industry. Some tailors only repair damaged clothes while others preform alterations such as hemming. Other tailors duties are more complex such as bead work or embroidery on wedding and formal gowns. Their duties range from measuring customers for alterations to drawing patterns for new apparel. The most common employment for tailors are in wedding stores. Since most bridal gowns are made bigger than usual to fit the customers. The other places of employment are department stores, dry cleaners, or apparel manufacturers.
As mentioned before to become a professional tailor, you have to complete your high school or at least pass the general equivalency exam. If your high school offer fashion design courses as an elective class take it, it's good to be prepared early and it will give you an idea on what to expect in college. Art courses can be helpful for developing your sense of style, color, and design. Be sure you are well versed with math, since math will play a big role in your career. You will be required accurately measure your clients body size and calculate how much fabric is needed. You should also develop your interpersonal skills to help you interact well with different people.
The college courses you should take are in fashion design or textiles. These courses are offered in your local community colleges, private institution or universities, it is up to you to decide which establishment you want and affordable. To become a tailor the suggested course is fashion design, where you will learn how to sew, and garment construction patterns and other activities. Most of your time will spend in your classroom practicing various sewing and stitching techniques.
By now you have to be familiar in using a sewing machine, tape measures, changing a new sewing machine needle and making patterns. You shouldn't have a problem getting an internship program at a department store or dry cleaners of your liking. This will give you the opportunity to learn the business side and how to deal with different clients. You could seek part-time employment in a specialty clothing store if alteration or repair work is unavailable. If an internship isn't feasible, try performing alterations or repairs for friends and relatives to get some practical tailoring experience.
