Easy Ways To Improve Your Garden At Home

by Blaine Peters

Gardening may not come natural for everyone. While some have a "green thumb" others do not! The good news is that help is on its way! Here are some tips and tricks from experienced gardeners. Read on for some of these great gardening suggestions.

When and why should shrubs be pruned? Most shrubs need pruning to increase flowering. Deciduous spring and early flowering shrubs should be pruned immediately after flowering. Cut back old wood to encourage new growth. The buds for next year's flowers will appear on this new wood. Late summer flowering shrubs should be pruned in spring. They will produce flowers on the shoots that grow immediately after pruning. Winter flowering shrubs simply need pruning in early spring to clean up any dead or diseased branches.

To have the best flower garden pick plants that bloom at different times of the growing season. It is possible to find varieties of plants and flowers that bloom from January until November depending on where you live. By planting plants that peak at different times of the year you can ensure that there is always color and life in your yard.

When planning your home garden, be sure to choose some crops that are typically costly to purchase from your local grocery store. By doing this, you can end up saving yourself a lot of money, sometimes fifty dollars or more every month, depending on the crop. Plus, you are guaranteed to have the freshest vegetables available!

Make sure the hole you plant for a tree or shrub is at least three times wider than the root ball of the seedling. Most of the root system of a tree or shrub is found in the top foot of the soil. Planting a seedling in a small hole will result in slower growth and failure to thrive.

To help keep slugs and snails out of your garden, minimize any moist, cool spots you may have. Wood piles and empty flower pots can provide shade to these pests. They need a shady, cool spot to survive so if you eliminate such places in your garden, the slugs and snails will eventually wander somewhere else.

Water saving ideas for the garden. In areas where water is scarce, gardeners may need to shift the emphasis to plants that require little moisture. The best thing to do is to eliminate as much lawn as possible, as it uses more water per square foot than any other form of ordinary landscaping. Lawn areas can be replaced with ground cover that needs little moisture, gravel, wood chips or decking. Mulching helps to keep moisture in the soil by lessening evaporation.

As you have seen in the above tips, there is a lot of knowledge you can acquire before starting to grow your own garden and it is this knowledge that can help you. Do everything you must, in order to figure out what will work for you, in regards to your gardening needs.
