How To Use Water-Based Screen-Printing Ink

by Jason Wilson

Screen-printing is perhaps the most versatile way to adhere images, logos or text to any number of materials such as fabrics, magnets and cups. Water based screen printing ink is one of two basic formulas used in the process. The other is known as plastisol inks.

The most commonly used type is plastisol. This formula is preferred for a lot of surfaces that are solid and inflexible. It is applied in thick layers and dries to a firm, rubbery consistency. Since there are no solvents included in this mixture, a heat source must be applied in order to complete the curing process.

The second formula does as it's name suggests and uses water as the main solvent although, depending on the project, substances such as petroleum based mixtures may act as co-solvents. Curing occurs as all of the moisture evaporates from the design and the ink becomes one with the product. Most of the time it is allowed to set naturally at room temperature, but when this process is too slow, a heat source such as a dryer may be applied to speed things up.

Several functional differences set the two types of inks apart from one another. There are quite a few advantages to choosing to work with the water-based medium over the plastisols. This is especially true when working with fabric items like sweatshirts, tees and hoodies.

This formula is usually best for fabrics and wallpapers because of the water-based solvent. It penetrates the material and dyes it on a deeper level, actually becoming part of the make-up of the product itself. The final result is a design that has a soft, natural feel to it.

The overall effect is that the color was always meant to be part of the product. The designs bend and flex with the material in a way that seems as if it were applied during the actual weaving process. All this pliability makes the prints easier to wear and they look great in their vibrant hues.

These types of inks do not use the thick application methods of the plastisols. They dry to a thin, smooth finish so there is no cracking and peeling when the item is put through it's intended routine. It moves naturally with the fabric and avoids that plastic iron-on feeling.

This medium produces strong, vibrant pigments that work excellently when needing to apply darker colors onto fabrics of light hues. The designs last longer and resist fading over time or from exposure to sunlight. Because of the quick, smooth application, this is the preferred choice for use in most high speed industrial machines that mass produce rolls of printed items such as material or wallpaper.

Because of the method by which it cures, using water based screen printing ink may take a little longer to finish an entire project. A cleaning system that takes into concern the disposal of any co-solvents that may be harmful to the environment should be implemented. Operators should also take care to be sure the medium is never allowed to sit unused inside the frame long enough to dry because it will clog the mesh and ruin the screen if permitted to set.
