The Best Flowers For Hummingbirds And Butterflies
by Lynne Bonner
If you are trying to find flowers for hummingbirds and butterflies there are many varieties to choose from. The main requirement is that they produce nectar, which is what attracts both creatures. Different plants require different levels of care however, and some plants are only suitable for specific climates and regions of the country. However, there are many beautiful plants that will attract both hummingbirds and butterflies. flowers for hummingbirds and butterflies
Azaleas are a popular choice, especially in the Southeastern states where they are most abundant. They are relatively easy to plant and care for and they attract a variety of colorful species as well as enticing ruby-throated hummers. The plants are also attractive to look at in their own right.
At the opposite end of the alphabet the blooming radiance of the zinnia plant is equally appetizing for winged and feathered friends. Hummingbirds seem to be most attracted to red flowers, but any color will do. The zinnias produce a nectar that is well liked by birds and insects.
Many other types of plants are good attractants as well, but some of them are invasive species in some areas. Before planting a potentially invasive plant, you should check to see if it is considered a nuisance plant in your area or whether it is native or non-invasive for your location. Invasive plants are introduced species that adapt too well to a certain area and then crowd out native plants with sometimes disastrous environmental consequences for native wildlife.
In places where planting is difficult, artificial feeders loaded with nectar can serve as a temporary substitute for blooming plants. They can be bought at commercial big box stores and hardware stores. Although they are not as attractive as spring plants in bloom they can still be alluring for birds and insects.
Finding the right flowers for hummingbirds and butterflies may take time and practice. What works in one person's garden may not necessarily work somewhere else. However, there are many flowering plants that are good attractants, alphabetically from azaleas to zinnias and many types in between.
