Initial Pillows And Many Other Types Of Cushions

by Tameka Ware

Initial pillows, like many of their brethren, are made out of a filler material and a cover. The former can be made out of many types of material; foam, synthetic fibres, latex among others. Down, the fine material found under the tough exterior layer of feathers in most birds, is generally regarded as the best filler to use when making cushions. It is very soft and pliable. Its also quite expensive.

Fortunately, more suitable fillers exist. One of the most popular is buckwheat hull. The primary reason for its popularity lies in the fact that it needs no special treatment before use; this is one of the most Eco friendly fillings available. It stands up well to abuse, resisting breakage, burning and general deterioration extremely well. Little wonder then that the Japanese have used it in cushion making for hundreds of years.

Buckwheat hull may have been used by the Japanese for hundreds of years, but contour cushions are a more recent invention. These were developed by the American space agency, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, to protect its spacemen during takeoff. The material is extremely adaptable, offering a lot of support. It also springs back to its former shape when it is not being used.

The problem with many types of filling is that they tend to cause allergic reactions in some people. Such individuals could benefit from cotton. This material is not only hypoallergenic, but is also pliable, yet firm. Another advantage is that it breathes, which allows to remain cool in use. Since it releases no unpleasant gases, it can be used safely. Its primary drawback is that its extremely absorbent; liquids should be kept away from it.

Cotton is sometimes blended with artificial materials like polyester in order to improve its durability and make the filling more affordable. The synthetic filler is arranged in three dimensional structures; this way, it can offer better support when it is being used, and also helps the cushion keep its shape. This filling is odor free, while still maintaining the cotton's hypoallergenic properties.

Filler materials are not the only way to classify cushions; they can also be categorized by use. Full length ones are used for the entire body; part of it works like a normal cushion, providing support for the neck and head, while the rest takes care of the legs and knees. These kinds of cushions are especially popular with expectant women. Most find this arrangement better than using separate cushions for each area of the body.

The donut cushion is shaped much like the popular delight it is named after; it has a large hole in the middle. This is placed on seats and other surfaces before sitting on them, which ensures that the lower back has the necessary support. This is recommended for those who have a broken or bruised tail bone, or those that suffer from lower back pain.

Travel cushions are U shaped, their design meant to provide support for the neck whenever someone is sleeping or sitting upright. This prevents the head moving too far from one side to the other. Apart from initial pillows, these are some of the most popular types of cushions available.
